My husband and I founded Holton’s Drive for SIDS after losing our second son, Holton, to SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome) on March 28th 2007 during his normal morning nap. With no warning…on a normal weekday morning as we rushed to the hospital after getting the phone call…he was gone. It was unbelievable…I had just fed him, changed his diaper as he happily babbled less than 2 hours ago!! He wasn’t sick…hadn’t acted abnormally at all that morning...he was smiling his big gummy grin as I kissed him goodbye for the day when I loaded him into the truck for Shawn to take to daycare.
SIDS changed our lives that day…not just Shawn and I but our entire family and everyone surrounding us. I remember vividly one of the first things that came out of my mouth after the doctor told us the news, “Hudson is an only child now? How can he have a brother this morning and now he doesn’t?” And that…made me really mad. Those of you that know me can attest to what happens next…I fight…because that is what moms do when it comes to our children. Shawn and I aren’t the type of people that could just let this go…we had to do something and it was really important to keep his name alive. We decided to be "Better...not Bitter" and thus HDS was born (incidentally, also his initials Holton David Spradley). HDS is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization. Our main event each year is a large golf tournament and auction each fall. We also take part in multiple other events throughout the year that can be found in our events section of the website.
Our five month old was taken from us by the mystery that is called SIDS. Honoring him through these events has become his legacy. Our mission is to help end Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. Each day in this country 7 families begin to live the terrible nightmare that we endure. We do this for those babies and future babies. To date, we have raised in excess of $350,000....which funds medical research and helps other families like us deal with the pain of losing a child. We partner with First Candle, which is the nation’s leading infant survival organization. Through this tragic event we've been so touched by the support shown by so many. Our community has surrounded us with love and prayers and continues to help where we need it most. In many cases of the loss of a child families are torn apart. This has not been the case for Shawn, myself, Hudson and Nash as we have grown stronger and face each day with strength and drive to fight for Holton. Please join us in helping to eradicate this deadly syndrome.
In Holton's name and with sincere appreciation,
Kathy Spradley and Family
HDS was born out of us not wanting to be the elephant in the room...we wanted to do something to bring our family, friends and community together for a purpose. The ugly reality of the funeral process is the days following are really lonely and dark...when all the "busy" has stopped and people go back to their regular lives.
We were left with this new normal and were struggling. So we decided to start HDS...and we called all the people that said "let me know if there is anything I can do for you" as is so often said at funerals. We put them to work! And this amazing movement of golf tournaments, auctions, festivals and community events was born. We raise funds any way we can with proceeds going to fund medical research to fight Sudden Infant Death Syndrome and also to provide support to other SIDS families. SIDS is a monster...it lives in the grey area of that doctors just do not yet know why it happens. It is our ultimate goal to see in our lifetime the cause of SIDS and thus how to prevent it from happening to any other baby ever. Every day in the United States 7 families are living the nightmare that we lived on March 28, 2007. We think about that all the time...how it destroys, how it in one minute can make a sibling an only child again in an instant. So we fight...with an army of warrior volunteers...we educate about SIDS risk factors and talk about Holton and his story and we raise money to fund the incredible minds that we believe will solve this mystery. And that is why Holton's 5 short months on this earth mean more than the 40 plus years we have lived.
It is his legacy.
